Greenspan - FOMC to do what required to fight inflation By Greg Robb
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Federal Reserve rate hikes are likely to be measured, but the central bank is "prepared to do what is required" to fight inflation, Federal Reserve board chairman Alan Greenspan said. Financial markets appear prepared for higher interest rates unlike 1994, Greenspan said in a speech prepared for delivery to the International Monetary Conference in London. Greenspan said that there has been a return of business pricing power and the threat of deflation has ended. But he said cost pressures have been "relatively subdued." The rise of energy prices is a "worrisome element" that has been a net drain on the economy and could boost inflation if the high price level persists.

Dow tracker hit by Greenspan comments By Tomi Kilgore
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - The "Diamonds" (DIA: news, chart, profile), a tracking stock for the Dow industrials ($INDU: news, chart, profile), took a hit after Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan said interest rate hikes may not be measured if necessary. The "Diamonds" were last trading down 30 cents at $103.68 in the pre-open, vs. pre-Greenspan levels of about $103.82. The S&P 500 tracker (SPY: news, chart, profile) was shedding 33 cents to $114.37 and the Nasdaq 100 tracker (QQQ: news, chart, profile) was 13 cents lower at $36.92, vs. pre-Greenspan levels of about $114.49 and $36.95, respectively.
